Parkinsons
Parkinson is a movement disorder manifested by
- Slowing and trepidated movement
- Rigidity of muscles
- Tremor at rest
- Unstable posture
- Monotonous, stuttering speech
In Primary Parkinson Disease, which generally starts after age 40, there is a significant deficience of Dopamine (a neurotransmitter) resulting from loss of certain brain tissues that stores or uses Dopamine.
In secondary Parkinson, selected chemical substance such as toxins or drugs interfer with the action of Dopamine at the same brain areas.
Symptoms usually seen in Parkinson patients are:
- Tremor of the hands and feet mostly at rest and absent during sleep
- Movement becomes slow, decreased and difficult to initiate
- Rigidity of muscles lead to mask like facial, expression, diminished blinking, resistant passive movement (cogwheel rigidity)
- Shuffling - short steps at a time-fascination- small run to keep from falling.
- Stooped posture
- Mood Forms, Speech
- Micro graphics - with small handwriting
Treatment:
Drugs: There are armamentariums of drugs used in the treatment of Parkinson.
Most commonly used drug is Cashidopal Lesodopa
Others are
- Amantadine
- Bromocriphin - use may be limited
- Oergkud'
- Selegiline - may slow down the redegeneration process associated With Parkinson
- Antichlmergic
- Inderal - helps with the move tremor problems
Surgery: Mostly experimental but appears promising
