VOMITING
Vomiting is a rapid evaluation of stomach contents in a retrograde fashion; that is material in the stomach instead of usually moving into the small bowel, forcefully comes out through the mouth.
Common Causes of Vomiting:
- Psychogenic
- Excess Stomach Content
- Drugs
- Intra-Abdominal Problems
- Colic
- Sepsis
- Perforated bowel
- Pyloric stenosis
- Toxin
- Metabolic Diseases
- Viral/Bacterial Gastroenteritis
- Cyclic Vomiting in Children
- Pregnancy
- Abdominal Pain
- Patients with protracted vomiting can suffer from dehydration, hypokalemia, and alkalosis.
- If individual who vomits a lot develops muscle weakness, polydipsia (drinking too much water). cannot concentrate urine, abdominal distention, cramps, weakness, somnolence, stupor, or hypotension, he/she will need immediate medical attention and possible hospitalization.
Note: Projectile (forceful) vomiting is often a warning sign of a central nervous system disease such as meningitis.
