CONSTIPATION
Normal bowel habits range from one bowel movement per one-three days, to three-four stools per day.
And individual generally can discern significant changes in his or her bowel habits. Some individuals may have only one stool per week or longer for many years. This however, is the exception.
Some constipation may be a lifelong problem and may be as a result of a congenital disease.
Recent onset of constipation may be due to reaction to:
- Stress
- Changes in diet
- Enteric infection
- Cancer of the colon
- Metabolic disorder
- Drugs such as, Phenothiazine, and anti-cholinergics
- Severe immobility
- Dehydration
Important Note: Changes in the caliber of the stool may be an early warning of an organic obstruction and may be due to a constricting disease such as cancer of the distal colon.
Suggested Remedies:
- Assess if any of the above conditions exist. High-fiber diet.
- Fluid replenishment.
- Fruits and vegetables.
- Some may need catharsis or enemas.
- Avoid Immobility.
- If all else fails, consider disimpaction.
